In our last blog post, we covered the reasons why it can be dangerous to live in a cold house. However, when you have a broken heating and air system, it’s not just cold houses you have to worry about — living in an excessively hot home can be just as harmful. Omaha homes can be pretty toasty in the summer months, and if you’re having HVAC problems, you’ll be left without your only reliable defense against the blistering heat.
That’s why it’s important to pursue air conditioning repair and maintenance as soon as you know your unit has a problem — or even as a preventative measure. Here are some reasons why you should avoid living in a hot home at all costs.
Lack of Sleep
Hot temperatures don’t have a monopoly on sleep deprivation. It can be just as difficult to sleep in cold temperatures, but there’s an important distinction between the two — in cold weather, you can add as many layers as you have available to add extra warmth in the night. Conversely, in the summer months, there’s only so much you can remove to fight the heat, and sometimes, it’s not enough. At this point, your options are few; air conditioning is your best bet, but if that’s not running, you’re pretty much out of luck.
The consequences of sleep deprivation are well-known and well-documented. People are more productive, alert, and have better mental faculties after a full night’s sleep. Additionally, consistent sleep deprivation can lead to grievous effects, slowly wearing down your body and mind. If one goes long enough with no sleep at all, it can drive them mad or even kill them. While it’s highly unlikely that you’d get to that extreme point due to hot conditions alone, the point is that you don’t want to be living in a space where you’re losing out on sleep on a daily basis.
Lethargy and Poor Concentration
Do you ever feel like powerful heat just sucks the energy right out of you? Well, you wouldn’t be wrong; in a certain sense, it quite literally does.
When you’re hot, you tend to feel lethargic and lacking in concentration or motivation. Many people are far less productive in a hot home. This is due to a few reasons:
Dehydration: It’s easier to find yourself dehydrated in a hot environment, which in turn makes you feel more tired and lacking in energy. It’s not hard to reach a state of dehydration, even if it’s mild. That’s why you should always be paying attention to how much water you drink!
Energy Expenditure: In hot temperatures, the body uses up a fair amount of energy trying to keep itself cool. Sweating is one of the ways that it does this, which leads to the aforementioned dehydration if you’re not careful. It’s a vicious cycle.
Low Blood Pressure: Heat tends to lower your blood pressure. There is a normal and expected degree to which this happens in everyone in hot weather, but it can surpass the levels of normalcy, which will lead to less blood reaching the brain. This can cause headaches, nausea, and a state of fatigue as your brain struggles to operate at optimal levels
